Design exploration is about generating as many solutions as possible against clear requirements. Start wide to map constraints, then create quick variations to uncover options you might not reach otherwise. Exploration can be done solo or in a group. Use this when starting a new component, pattern, or template, or when reworking an existing one.

Design Exploration
How to
-
Audit requirements
Run an Audit to capture what exists today. Translate findings into Pattern Requirements and constraints for exploration.
-
Frame the challenge
Write a short problem statement that explains the problem, who it affects, and why it matters. For example: "Teams are duplicating modal patterns, causing inconsistent behaviour and wasted effort."
-
Generate options
Use Crazy 8s sketching to create a wide set of quick variations. Aim for eight sketches in eight minutes. If in a group, share and discuss between rounds, then repeat as many times as needed.
-
Refine ideas
Individually or as a group, mark which options best meet the requirements and solve the problem.
-
Review together
If in a group, put refined options side by side and discuss. If solo, organise a Design Crit to gather feedback and stress test the best directions.
Expand options: Generate 10-20 variations to review. This speeds up exploration but you'll still need to judge which directions are worth pursuing.
